Building a portfolio from zero

“How do I get clients without experience, and how do I get experience without clients?” It is the classic beginner problem. The answer is a portfolio built from your own sample projects.

Create sample projects

You don’t need a client to show your skills. Create the kind of work you want to be hired for:

  • Designers can create logos or flyers for imaginary or local businesses
  • Writers can write sample articles on topics they want to write about
  • Video editors can edit free stock footage into a short promo

Treat each sample like a real job, with a clear brief and a professional finish.

Quality over quantity

Three to five strong pieces are better than twenty average ones. Show only the work you are proud of, and remove older pieces as you improve.

Show the process

For each piece, add a short note: what the goal was, what you did and the result. Clients want to see how you think, not just the final file.

Offer a few low-risk projects

Consider doing a small number of discounted projects for real people, such as a local shop, a friend’s business or a community group, in exchange for honest feedback and permission to show the work.

Put it where clients can see it

Add your samples to your freelance profile and gig gallery, and keep a simple online portfolio you can share as a link.

Keep updating

Every new project is a chance to improve your portfolio. Replace your weakest piece each time you complete something better.
